Course Description:

This course introduces principles of identification, cultivation, and maintenance of woody and herbaceous landscape plant materials.

Measurable Performance Objectives (MPOs):

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Compare major landscape plant materials and their uses (trees, shrubs, climbers, perennials, annuals, biennials bulbous plants, ferns, and aquatic plants).
    1. Interpret characteristics of various landscape plant materials.
    2. Examine various plants.
  2. Demonstrate proper methods of cultivation of herbaceous and woody plant materials.
    1. Practice propagation techniques of herbaceous and woody landscape plant materials.
    2. Cultivate perennials, annuals, and biennials.
  3. Propose uses of various landscape plant materials.
    1. Examine plant hardiness and exposure.
    2. Interpret the gardening environment for various plant materials.
    3. Differentiate the ornamental plant groups (trees, shrubs, climbers, perennials, annuals, biennials bulbous plants, ferns, and aquatic plants).
  4. Use design principles as they apply to landscape planning.
    1. Review design principles of composition: scale, balance, rhythm, emphasis, and simplicity.
    2. Create design graphics.
  5. Design a finished landscape plan.
    1. Create a public area landscape plan.
    2. Construct a private area landscape plan.
    3. Diagram a plan with emphasis on native plants.
Evaluation Criteria/Policies:

Students must demonstrate proficiency on all CCPOs at a minimal 75 percent level to successfully complete the course. The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

92 100 = A
83 91 = B
75 82 = C
0 74 = F
