Course Description:

This course provides an overview of the common breeds of companion animals. Breed characteristics and genetic disease predisposition are discussed. Fundamental principles of animal behavior, including patterns of behavior, evolution of behavior, reproduction, and abnormal behavior are addressed.

Measurable Performance Objectives (MPOs):

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Identify common breeds and breed characteristics of companion animals such as dogs and cats.
    1. Recognize American Kennel Club (AKC)-approved dog breeds and Cat Fancier Association (CFA)-approved cat breeds.
    2. Identify qualities of the AKC groups (e.g., herding and working) as they relate to pet selection, behavior, and training.
    3. Identify breeds that are predisposed to common genetic diseases.
  2. Relate how the period of socialization in the puppy or kitten affects behavior and learning.
    1. Define and identify the period of socialization in kittens and puppies.
    2. Summarize the role of the female in learning and behavior.
    3. Explain the care of the orphaned puppy or kitten.
  3. Describe normal and abnormal behavior in companion animals.
    1. Describe the evolution and principles of learning in companion animals.
    2. Compare the social structure of the dog and cat.
    3. Differentiate between normal and abnormal behavior.
    4. Describe common behavior problems, and list reasons for those behavior problems.
    5. Describe body language messages denoting friendliness, aggression, play, and other behaviors.
    6. Describe breeding cycles and reproductive behavior.
  4. List training and behavior modification techniques used in the treatment of common behavior problems.
    1. Identify physical issues that may contribute to or cause behavior issues.
    2. Identify the components of a behavior history form.
    3. Define the role of the veterinary technician in the diagnosis and treatment of behavior problems.
    4. Describe methods, including behavior modification used to treat common behavior problems.
    5. Compare and contrast obedience training and behavior modifications.
Evaluation Criteria/Policies:

Students must demonstrate proficiency on all CCPOs at a minimal 75 percent level to successfully complete the course. The grade will be determined using the Delaware Tech grading system:

92 100 = A
83 91 = B
75 82 = C
0 74 = F
